537) Windmills and Watermills: A set of six Stamps issued by the Royal Mail U.K. on 13.07.2017:

Windmills and Watermills – A brief:

Some of UK’s windmills and watermills are over 400 years old and many are still in working condition. As a tribute to these iconic eco-friendly structures, this attractive set of six stamps covers three windmills and three watermills from around the UK.

The First day Cover (FDC) is titled "Windmills and Watermills". It shows the six stamps issued on the mills with their photographs on the stamps. The set of stamps has been cancelled with a hand-stamp depicting the Old Mill, Callington and is dated "20.06.2017"
The six stamps showing the three Windmills - Nutley Windmill, East Sussex (1st), Ballycopeland Windmill, County down (1.40 Pounds), Woodchurch Windmill, Kent (1.57 Pounds) and the three Water Mills - New Abbey Corn Mill, Dumfries and Galloway (1st), Cheddleton Flint Mill, Staffordshire (1.40 Pounds) and Felin Cochwillan Mill, Gwynedd (1.57 Pounds)
Two postcards brought out on two large value stamps

Ballycopeland Windmill:
                    Ballycopeland Windmill stamp (1.40 Pounds)

Known in Irish as “Muileann gaoithe Bhaile Choplainn”, this functioning windmill is located one mile west of Millisle, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is managed by “The Historic Environment Division of The Department for Communities”.
It is a typical Irish stone tower mill, with a moveable cap turned by means of an automatic fantail so as to ensure that the sails are always facing the wind. The mill has three storeys – a “drive” floor, “stone” floor and “hopper” floor.
The plastered and white-washed tapering tower is a prominent landmark and it is the last remaining windmill out of more than 100 mills which were functioning in County Down at one time.
Believed to have been built around the 1780s this windmill is owned by the McGilton family and the mill ground grain until 1915. It was operational until the First World War, when it fell into disrepair.
In 1935, it was acquired by the government of Northern Ireland.
The old windmill remained in disuse for several years/decades, and was gradually restored between 1950 and 1978, to full working order again.
Cheddleton Flint Watermill:
                     Cheddleton Windmill Stamp (1.40 Pounds)

This watermill is situated in the village of Cheddleton in the English county of Staffordshire.
The mill race takes water from the river Churnet and this place has been used for milling since the Middle Ages.
The present structures that constitute the watermill were built around the period of the Industrial Revolution.
Two mills exist here – one was purpose-built to grind flint for use in the pottery industry and the other is used as a corn-mill. The mill complex includes a miller’s cottage, two flint kilns and out-buildings and is located adjacent to the Caldon Canal. There is also a small museum with many quaint period exhibits.
The complex is maintained and operated by the “Cheddleton Flint Mill Preservation Trust” which was formed in 1967 to preserve the unique mill complex and to provide educational information concerning the historical development of pottery raw materials.
In 1972, the Trust widened its objectives to encompass more of Britain’s Industrial Heritage and was renamed as the “Cheddleton Flint Mill Industrial Heritage Trust”.
Felin Cochwillan Mill:
Felin Cochwillan Watermill Stamp (1.57 Pounds)

Felin Cochwillan is a privately owned well-preserved large estate corn watermill situated on a loop of the Ogwen River, close to Snowdonia National Park, in North Wales, UK.
The first reference to a mill on this site exists in a register of the Land of Cochwillan Estate, and is dated 1560, but this reference may have been a copy of an earlier record of the mill dating further back. The remains of the original mill built over 450 years ago can still be seen today.
The present mill was built about 200 years ago as a fulling mill and later converted to grind corn, barley and oats. Most of its machinery remains intact, including the water wheel, mill stones and drying kiln.
In 1901, the Mill was taken over by one John Hughes who installed pulleys and shafting to assist in working the mill’s four sets of stones.
By the end of the 19th Century, new “Roller Mills” were installed and mass produced cheap flour sounding the death knell of the traditional stone grinding flour mills. The mill also continued with animal feed production as there was a huge demand for milk, cheese and bacon.
In 1955, the mill was closed on My Hughes passing away.
The mill was later purchased by Vernon Barker who used the facility for making spinning wheels, looms and ancient machines of the woollen industry.
Subsequently, the ownership of the mill passed onto Barker’s nephew Howard Hutchinson who has restored and preserved the mill as a heritage structure.
Lower Mill, Woodchurch:
                 Woodchurch Windmill Stamp (1.57 Pounds)
Lower Mill was built in 1820, and was one of a pair of smock mills, the other being the Upper Mill. It is a four-storey smock mill on a single-storey brick base.
During its working life, the mill was fitted with millstones from the smock mill at Dymchurch and the post mill at Kennington.
Around 1926, the mill which was then fitted with sails and a 7 Horse Power steam engine providing auxiliary power to the mill, stopped operations.
In 1946, the mill was made weather proof but further repairs and restoration of the mill were stalled as the then owner passed away.
In 1957, local villagers raised money for two new sails, but the cap was found to be unsafe shortly afterwards and the sails had to be removed.
In the 1970s, the mill was on the point of collapse, but a restoration programme was put in place and the mill was fully restored and fitted with patent sails.
A complete new smock tower was built and restoration was completed in 1986.
In May 2010, a new stage was made and fitted to the mill. It has a Kentish style cap and is winded by a fan-tail. There is a stage at first-floor level and the mill has four patent sails carried on a cast-iron windshaft.  Interestingly, the Great Spur Wheel has survived over the decades.
New Abbey Corn Mill:
New Abbey Corn Watermill Stamp (1.40 Pounds)
The New Abbey Corn Mill was built at the end of 1700s. There are tell-tale signs that another mill existed at this place around the 1200s, when “Sweetheart Abbey” was founded in the village.

Though the Stewarts of nearby Shambellie House built the present mill, it is still known as the “Monk’s Mill”.
In the 1700s, agricultural advances saw farmers gather vastly improved crop yields which led to the need for the present mill.
Originally two storeys high, with two millstones, the mill grew in the 1800s as an extra floor and millstone were added.
This mill has examples of hand-powered grindstones, like those used in pre-historic times. Harnessing water to power mill wheels was a great step forward, probably introduced by the Romans.
For a long time, country mills like New Abbey Mill ground oats, barley, wheat etc used by local villagers as staple food. Later many mills also switched to producing animal feed.
The first recorded miller is Thomas Millar (1825) and the last one was John Chingan when the mill stopped functioning soon after World War II (in 1948). Till 1948, New Abbey was used to mill oats, both for human and animal consumption.
The water powered mill which functioned on a small scale, has been restored to full working order and provides an insight into Scottish rural life in days gone by.
Nutley Windmill:
                                    Nutley Windmill Stamp (1st)

Nutley Mill is an open trestle post mill at Nutley, East Sussex, England.
Around 1817, the mill was shifted from Kilndown, Goudhurst, Kent (where it was functioning from mid- 1500s onwards) and was the first windmill recorded at Nutley.
In 1870, the mill was painted white and worked on four common sails.
In 1880, the mill was modernised with the original wooden windshaft being replaced by a cast iron one and spring sails replacing the common sails. Larger millstones were added.
Until 1908, the mill worked by wind although it still functioned thereafter, although it was in a worn out condition.
In 1928, the mill was shored up with brick piers and steel joists below the body, which allowed the mill to function effectively.
In 1968, restoration was carried out.
By 1971, the mill was turning by wind again and grinding grain from 1972 onwards.
In 1975, Nutley Windmill was given by its owner to Uckfield and District Preservation Society as a heritage structure.
The mill suffered a broken stock in 1984, when a TV programme was being filmed. It suffered further damage in the Great storm of 1987.
In 1998, repairs were carried out which made the mill functional again.
In 2008, new sails were fitted again and the mill is working in fine condition ever since.
