300) “Ghats of Varanasi”: MyStamps (issued by India Post): Sumita:

300) “Ghats of Varanasi”: MyStamps (issued by India Post): Sumita:

(This post is in continuation of my previous post on “Mystamp” albums issued in Sumita’s and my name, with famous locations, with our photographs affixed thereon. Link as follows:
1) "Ajanta & Ellora Caves": "MyStamps" (issued by India Post): Sumita and Rajeev

2) "Sun Temple, Konark": "MyStamps" (issued by India Post): Rajeev

Given below is a sheet of 12 Stamps titled “MyStamps”, featuring Sumita’s photo together with an image of the Ghats of Varanasi:

The above is an image of the MyStamps stamps featuring an image from the “Ghats of Varanasi”, together with Sumita’s photograph. The album contains 12 Stamps of the value of Rs.5/- each. The image of the stamps on the left shows the evening “Agni Pooja” or “Aarti” at Dashwasheshmedha Ghat. The other Stamp shows boats on the Ghats for ferrying pilgrims/tourists on the River Ganges.

The Stamps are contained in an elegant Stamp Album, as under:

The Stamp album is also titled: “Bhartiya Dak Tikit” (in Hindi) and “India Postage stamps” (in English).

(The MyStamps Albums on the “Ajanta Caves” and “Ellora Caves” are given in my previous post and the one on “Konark Sun Temple” is given in my next post)

The term “Ghats” in most of North India, refers to a series of steps leading down to a body of water or river – particularly a Holy River.

The Ghats of Varanasi or the Ghats of the Ganga or Ganges refer to such steps in Varanasi leading to the riverfront on the banks of the River Ganges. Of the 87 odd Ghats, most of the Ghats are used for bathing and “pooja” or "puja" (“worship” or “praying”) ceremonies, while a few of them are used solely as cremation sites.

The majority of the Ghats on the River Ganges at Varanasi were constructed after 1700 AD, when the city was a part of the Maratha Empire. The patrons who built/frequented the present Ghats were the Shindes (Scindias), Holkars, Bhonsles and the Peshwes (Peshwas), while several ghats are privately owned.

Some of the more popular Ghats are Dash-Ashwamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, Harishchandra Ghat, Scindia Ghat, Maan-Mandir Ghat, Lalita Ghat etc.

Of these, the Dash-Ashwamedh Ghat located near the Vishwanath Temple is the most spectacular Ghat.

Two Hindu legends are associated with it:

The first legend has it the Lord Brahma, built it to welcome Lord Shiva.

The second legend mentions that Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses, during the “Dash-Aswamedha Yagna” (meaning the “sacrifice of ten horses through Vedic rites accompanied with a sacred fire and mantras”).

Agni Pooja” or evening “Aarti”:

Following in this tradition, a group of priests performs an “Agni Pooja” (Worship of Fire) daily in the evening, wherein a dedication is made to Lord Shiva, the River Ganga (or Ganges), “Surya” (Sun), “Agni” (Fire) and the “Brahamand” (whole Universe).
Evening "Agni Pooja" or "Aarti" taking place at the Ganga water-front

The Harishchandra and Manikarnika Ghats are used for cremation purposes apart from several others. It is believed by the Hindus that the Ghats of Varanasi are one of the most auspicious locations for the ritual of “rite of passage”, when the cremation or “last rites” are performed amidst “poojas” (prayers), hymns and “mantras” (sacred chants).

Boat rides across the River Ganges are a popular tourist attraction which get a tourist to see the ghats. I remember that I had visited the Ghats last in 1983, when our group of State Bank of India Probationary Officers posted in Varanasi and neighbouring areas had planned a picnic on the River.
                   A boat-load of pilgrims/tourists

I was aghast to see half-burnt bodies and corpses floating down the Ganges along with our boat, which the Boatman said was a regular feature around the Ghats. (I felt that the Ganges was like the River Styx in Greek Mythology and our boatman was like Charon, the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the recently deceased across the River Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead, ferrying us across the Ganges River to the “other side/Bank”, with the floating corpses not being able to pay the boatman his fees for ferrying them across). Not only could I not eat the sandwiches packed for our river “picnic”, but I was rather disturbed for quite a few weeks.
It is a good thing that the Indian Government has now taken up a project to clean the Ganges of its pollutants, particularly the City Municipal waste and untreated sewage. I do hope that present day tourists are not encountering such ghastly sights anymore.
