The Indian Institute of Architects – Brief history:

The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) is the National Body of Architects in the country.

It was established in 12.05.1917, by George Wittet,  the then Consulting Architect to the Government of Bombay (present say Mumbai), who was unanimously elected the first President of the Indian Institute of Architects, which was primarily an association made of the past students of Architecture of J.J.School of Art, then known as “The Architectural Students Association”.

On 03.08.1922, it got renamed as the “Bombay Architectural Association” which got associated with the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1925.

In 1926, the Association got its present name “The Indian Institute of Architects” and became a National Body.

On 02.09.1929, it became registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 as a voluntary organisation of Architects.

The only other Organisation at the National level is the “Council of Architecture” which was established under the Architect’s Act 1972.

Chapters:

The Northern Chapter of the “Indian Institute of Architects” was started in 1956. Since then it has established Chapters in several Indian States and in major Indian cities, within those States.

These Chapters, inter alia, are:

IIA–Andhra Pradesh Chapter, Northern Chapter (IIA), West Bengal Chapter, Kerala Chapter (IIA), IIA-Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter, Sholapur-Maharashtra Chapter, Odisha Chapter.

Professional Courses:

The Institute of Architects conducts a professional examination if four parts. Students who qualify all the parts are awarded Associate Membership, which is a recognised qualification to work as an architect. The Institute also provides courses in Architecture, Town Planning and Human Settlement development.

Association with Foreign Bodies and co-operation in exchange of Architectural, Art and Building initiatives and innovations:

The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) is represented on various national and international committees connected with Architecture, Art and the building industry and is also actively associated with the International Union of Architects (UIA), Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) and South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation of Architects (SAARCH).

The Indian Institute of Architects (IAA) extends information of the Architectural scenario in India for the fellow Architects, prospective clients, students and people in general.

Present day:

The Institute has more than 20,000 members and plays a major role in promoting the profession of Architecture by organising and uniting in fellowship the Architects of India to promote aesthetic, scientific and practical efficiency of the profession both in Practice and in Education.

In the “Renaissance” or “Reawakening” of India, the Institute has played a pivotal role in the sphere of architecture. Its members are men and women of vision and ideals who have toiled hard to build the foundations of India’s Architectural marvels in the finest possible ways.
