About Jagadish Chandra Bose, CSI, CIE, FRS (30.11.1858- 23.11.1937):

He was a biologist, botanist, biophysicist, physicist, polymath and an archaeologist. He was also a writer of science fiction.

Early years & Education:

He was born at Bikramganj (now in Bangladesh) in the Bengal Presidency during the British Raj on 30.11.1858.

He studied in Hare School in 1869 and then went to St. Xavier’s School at Calcutta (present day Kolkata) and graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta in 1875.

At St. Xavier’s College, he was guided by the Jesuit Father Eugene Lafont who helped develop his interest in natural science. In 1879, he received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Calcutta.

In 1880, he left India for England to pursue his studies there. He wanted to emulate his father, who was a civil servant by competing for the Indian Civil Service, but was prevailed upon by his father and sent to the University of London to study medicine. He had to drop his studies in medicine because of health problems which were further compounded by the odour in the dissection rooms.

He then, took admission in Christ Church College, Cambridge to study natural science, and enrolled in the Natural Science Tripos (a special course of study). Here he studied under famous teachers like Lord Rayleigh, Michael Foster, James Dewar, Francis Darwin, Francis Balfour and Sidney Vines. Bose studied from the University of Cambridge in 1884, where he conducted his research with the Nobel Laureate Lord Rayleigh at Cambridge. In the same year, he received a B.Sc. from the University of London.

He returned to India in 1885, where he joined the Presidency College of the University of Calcutta as a Professor of Physics on a salary half that of his English colleagues. He accepted the job, but refused to draw his salary in protest. After three years, the College ultimately conceded his demand and paid him full salary from the date he joined the College.

At the Presidency College, Calcutta, he taught and conducted research for the next 30 years. He was very popular with his students and engaged their attention/interest by making extensive use of scientific demonstrations.

Here despite racial discrimination which he experienced and a lack of funding and equipment from the College authorities, he carried on his scientific research and made great progress in the research of remote wireless signalling and became the first scientist to use semi-conductor junctions to detect radio signals.

During the years 1894 – 1900, Bose performed pioneering research on radio waves and created “millimeter waves” as short as 5 mm.

He was the inventor of wireless telegraphy, but he has not received the credit for it. In 1895, a year before Guglielmo Marconi patented his invention, Bose demonstrated the functioning in public. However, unlike Marconi, who sought to commercialise his work with radio waves, Bose was purely interested in radio waves as a scientific endeavour. Having no intention to reap commercial benefits from his inventions, Bose always made his research public.

Although he did file for a patent for one of his inventions because of pressure from his Superiors, he was always reluctant to any form of patenting of his inventions and wanted his works to be further researched upon and developed by other scientists for the benefit of humankind and advancing scientific knowledge.

His work thus, pre-dates that of Guglielmo Marconi who is often associated with the development of wireless telegraphy.

Bose developed equipment for generating, transmitting and receiving radio waves and used it to demonstrate effectively/conclusively the wave’s properties such as reflection, total reflection, refraction, double refraction and polarisation.

He also experimented with galena to form an early type of semi-conductor diode, which could be used as a detector of electro-magnetic waves. His device could demonstrate the effects of electro-magnetic waves on living and non-living matter.

In 1894, he decided to devote himself to pure research. He converted a small enclosure adjoining a bathroom in the Presidency College into a laboratory and carried out his experiments in it.

He later made a number of pioneering discoveries in plant physiology and around 1900, used his own invention the “Crescograph” to measure plant response to various stimuli and thereby scientifically proved parallelism between animal and plant tissue. The Crescograph could record and observe the minute responses because of external stimulants. It was capable of magnifying the motion of plant tissues to about one million times of their actual size.

To facilitate his research, he constructed automatic recorders capable of registering extremely slight movements. These instruments produced very striking results, which helped him to demonstrate effectively of an “apparent power of feeling in plants”, exemplified by the quivering of injured plants. He demonstrated that plants are also sensitive to heat, cold, light, noise and various other external stimuli. He was the first to establish that every plant and every part of a plant appeared to have a sensitive nervous system and responded to shock by a spasm just as animal muscle does.

The Bose Experiment at the Royal Society of London in May 1901:

On 10.05.1901, Bose conducted his experiment at the Royal Society in London, to an audience which consisted of several eminent scientists among other observers. Everyone was curious to know how Bose’s experiment would demonstrate that plants had feelings like other living organisms/beings including humans.

He chose a plant whose mots were cautiously dipped up to its stem in a vessel holding the bromide solution. The salts of hydrobromic acid are like a poison. Bose plugged in the instrument with the plant and viewed the lighted spot on a screen showing the movements of the plant, as its pulse beat, and the spot began to and fro movement similar to a pendulum. Within minutes, the spot vibrated in a violent manner and finally came to an abrupt stop.

The whole sequence was almost like a poisoned rat fighting against death. The plant had died due to the exposure to the poisonous bromide solution.

Bose’s experiment was met with much acclaim among the scientific community, as well as scepticism by some physiologists who considered Bose as an intruder in the scientific community. It was more a case of “egos” being hurt by the brilliant Indian’s experiment, rather than any scientific reasons.

Bose retired in 1915 and was appointed Emeritus Professor at Presidency College, Calcutta for a period of five years.

In 1917, he founded the Bose Research Institute in Calcutta which was the first scientific research institute in India focussing primarily on the study of plants, which has since expanded to do research in various fields as well. In the same year, he was conferred upon a knighthood.

In 1920 he was elected the Fellow of the Royal Society for his amazing contributions and achievements.

Bose travelled frequently to Europe and the USA on various scientific missions and gave lectures on electro-magnetic waves, the effects of electro-magnetic waves on living and non-living matter, and plant physiology.

Bose passed away on 23.11.1937 at the age of 78.

His legacy:

He believed in the free exchange of scientific knowledge and strongly believed that knowledge grows by sharing it with fellow scientists.

He pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics, made extremely significant contributions to plant science and laid the foundation of experimental science in the Indian sub-continent.

He is credited with the invention of the Crescograph. He devised another instrument called the “Coherer” for detecting radio-waves.

His works and place in scientific history has since been re-evaluated. He is now credited with inventing the first wireless detection device, discovering millimeter length electro-magnetic waves and being a pioneer in the field of bio-physics.

Many of his instruments are still on display and remain largely usable now, even after more than 100 years, which include various antennae, polarisers and wave-guides. Modern forms of these instruments are still being used – present day.

In 1958, to commemorate his birth centenary, the JBNSTS scholarship programme was started in West Bengal and a Commemorative Postage Stamp was issued bearing his portrait.

On 14.09.2012, his experimental work in millimeter-band radio was recognised as an IEEE Milestone in Electrical and Computer Engineering, the first such recognition of a discovery in India.

Some of the honours and recognition bestowed on him include:

“Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire” (CIE, 1903)

“Companion of the Order of the Star of India” (CSI, 1912)

Knight Bachelor (1917), Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS, 1920)

Member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences (1928)

President of the 14th session on the Indian Science Congress in 1927

Member of Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters (1929)

Member of the League of Nations’ Committee for intellectual Co-operation

Founding fellow of the National Institute of Sciences of India (now the Indian National Science Academy), The Indian Botanic Garden was renamed Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in his honour (on 25.06.2009)

The Institution of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) which is a professional association with its corporate office in New York City and its operations centre in Piscataway, New Jersey, which presently has over 400,000 members in chapters world-wide, recognised him as “one of the fathers of radio science”.

A crater on the moon has been named in his honour.

His works (Publications):

In 1896, he wrote a short story “Niruddesher Kahani” (The Story of the Missing One) that was later expanded and included in the “Abyakta” collection in 1921 with the new title “Palatak Tuphan” (Runaway Cyclone). It was one of the first works of Bengali science fiction.

He authored two popular books – “Response in the Living and Non-living: (1902) and “The Nervous Mechanism of Plants” (1926). He also extensively researched the behaviour of radio-waves. Mostly known as a plant physiologist, he was actually a physicist.

Some other publications by him include:

Journals: “Nature” published about 27 papers, “On Elektromotive Wave accompanying Mechanical Disturbance in Metals in Contact with Electrolyte” (1902), “Sur la response electrique de la matiere vivante et animee soumise a une excitation – Deux proceeds d’observation de la reponse de la matiere vivante” (Journal de Physique (1902).
