On the second day of the Exhibition (i.e. 07.02.2016), the theme of the  three Special Covers released was Conserving Bio-diversity and saving Wildlife. Under this theme, another three interesting Special Covers were released – one on “BUTTERFLIES OF CHANDIGARH” and the other two on “MIGRATORY BIRDS OF SUKHNA LAKE” and “SUKHNA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY”.

The above is an image of the Special Cover brought out on 07.02.2016 at the, PUNPEX – 2016, depicting the “BUTTERFLIES OF CHANDIGARH”. On the left of the Special Cover are shown four varieties of Butterflies found in Chandigarh – 1) Striped Tiger 2) Common Sergeant, 3) Common Jezebel, 4) Peacock Pansy. In the centre is shown Chandigarh’s Butterfly Park.

The Rs.5/- Postage stamp depicts a butterfly under an inscription “Shubh Kamnayain” (in Hindi) and “Greetings” (in English). The Cancellation stamp is dated 07.02.2016 and is inscribed “State Level Philatelic Exhibition, PUNPEX – 2016, Chandigarh”. The logo of PUNPEX 2016 is to the left of the postage stamp.

On the Back of the Special Cover is the slogan “Join hands to save Wildlife”. The names of the butterflies shown on the Front of the Cover and a mention of the Butterfly Park is made on the Back of the Cover. The number of the Special Cover PB/02/2016 is mentioned along with the reference of the Chief Postmaster General, Punjab Circle, Sandesh Bhawan, Sector 17 E, Chandigarh.

1) Striped Tiger (Danaus genutia): It belongs to the Group of Crows and Tigers (Danainae) of Brush Footed butterflies family. It is also called the “Common Tiger” in India.
An image of a Striped Tiger Butterfly
This butterfly closely resembles the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) found in Mexico and the Americas.

The wingspan of the Striped Tiger is 75 mm to 95 mm.

The Striped Tiger butterfly is found throughout India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, South-East Asia and Australia (except New Guinea). The striped tiger occurs in scrub jungles, fallow land adjacent to habitation, dry and moist deciduous forests, preferring areas of moderate to heavy rainfall. It is also found in degraded hill slopes and ridges, both, bare and denuded, and also places covered with secondary growth. Although it is a strong flier, it never flies rapidly or high. Its scouts around searching for its host and nectar plants. It abounds in gardens where it feeds on nectar on flowers like Adelocaryum, Cosmos, Celosia, Lantana, and Zinnia et al.

Striped Tiger butterflies are leathery, tough to kill and fake their death. They have an unpleasant smell and taste which works to their advantage against predators.

2) Common Sergeant (Athyma perius): It belongs to the Nymphalidae Group of brush footed butterflies.
An image of a Common Sergeant  Butterfly

The Common Sergeant male has black wings with a series of white markings, while the female is blackish brown. The underside of the wings are ochre yellow with white markings as on the upper side but heavily defined with black. The antennae are black and there is a spot of ochre between the eyes. The thorax has a band or two of bluish spots anteriorly and posteriorly. The abdomen is transversely and narrowly barred with bluish white and below the abdomen is pure white. In the female, the abdomen has a double lateral row of minute black dots.

It is found in South Asia and South-East Asia. It is found throughout the Himalayas, India, Burma, Tenasserim, Siam and the Malay Peninsula.

It survives by using Glochidion lanceolatum, G. velutinum and Wendlandia thysoidea as food plants.

3) Common Jezebel (Delias eucharis): It belongs to the Group of Whites & Sulphurs (Pieridae).
An image of a Common Jezebel Butterfly

This is a medium sized pierid butterfly found in many places in South and South-East Asia, especially in the non-arid regions of India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand. The wingspan of both males and females measures between 6.5 to 8.5 cm.

The Common Jezebel is nomadic in behaviour and is found in several places including in temperate hill forests, tropical rain forests, dry open woodlands and beach hinterlands. They are found all over India except in the deserts and above altitudes of over 7000 feet in the hills. It can be seen flying among high trees, flowers, gardens. The Jezebel flies up in the canopy and comes lower down only to feed on nectar in the flowers. When it sits still with its wings closed, one can see its brilliantly coloured underside.

Interestingly, for its protection, its bright colouration indicates that it is unpalatable due to the toxins accumulated in its larva stage from the host plants, including small shrubs.

4) Peacock Pansy (Junonia almana):

It belongs to the Nymphalidae Group of butterflies and is found in India, South Asia, China and Japan.

The Peacock Pansy has two distinct adult forms which differ mainly in the patterns on the underside of the wings – the dry season form has few markings, while the wet season form has additional eyespots and lines.

The adult butterfly has a wingspan of 54 mm to 62 mm.

It feeds on a variety of plants, including Hygrophila auriculata, Phyla nodiflora and species in the genera Acanthus, Barleria and Gloxinia.

The following are the names of some of the Butterfly Species which are found in Chandigarh:

Milkweed Butterflies (Danainae): Blue Tiger (Tirumala limniace), Common Tiger or Striped Tiger (Danaus genutia), Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus), Common Indian Crow (Euploea core), Common Evening Brown (Melanitis leda).

Butterfly Park in Chandigarh:

The Butterfly Park in Chandigarh is located in Sector 26 and is spread over an area of 7 acres.
An image of a  landscaped section in the Butterfly Park in the shape of a butterfly taken on Special Cover

The principal objectives of setting up the Butterfly Park were :

-      To establish a Centre for Conservation, Education & Recreation which would be helpful in understanding about butterflies which are a valuable Bio-resource.

-      To promote Educational and training programmes for school and college students

-      To establish an interpretation centre to provide information on butterflies, their importance and conservation values.

Towards this end, the Forest Department has developed a Butterfly Park, full of host and nectar plants so as to make the habitat congenial to butterflies. A wide variety of host plants like Ashok, Salix, Mango, Citrus, Amla, Palm, Ixora, Bael et al have been planted for the more than 50 species of Butterflies, so as to create a conducive butterfly habitat.

To ensure adequate food availability, a large number of flowering plants have also been planted.

In this park, a Conservatory has been constructed admeasuring 20 x 10 metres. The prime objective behind making this conservatory is to increase the probability of butterfly sightings by the visitors to the Park.

Butterflies can be seen throughout the year in this park. The most common sightings are – Leopard, Plain Tiger, Striped tiger, Lime Butterfly, Peacock Pansy, Cabbage butterfly, Common Mormon, Common sergeant, Blue Tiger, Red Pierot etc.

Habitat destruction across the world is the major cause of butterfly extinction which is almost entirely due to human activity.

Other significant threats are:

Urbanisation, Clearing of Forest & Pollution, Monoculture and planting of exotic varieties, Use of Pesticides, Illegal trade in butterflies et al.

There is a pressing need to conserve butterflies, which in turn help in conserving the Environment.
It may not be out of place to mention, that butterflies are very sensitive to pollution and the presence of butterflies is one of the vital indicators of a healthy Forest/Eco-system.
