311) Standard Chartered Bank: Commemorating 150 years of Banking in India in 2008: A commemorative postage stamp in the denomination of Rs.5/- was issued by the Department of Posts, India on 17.11.2008:

The evolution of the Standard Chartered Bank – the Predecessors:

About The Chartered Bank (established in 1853):

The Chartered Bank was founded by James Wilson following the grant of a Royal Charter by Queen Victoria in 1853.

The Bank opened in Bombay (present day Mumbai), Calcutta (present day Kolkata) and Shanghai in 1858, followed by Hong Kong and Singapore in 1859.

The traditional trade was in cotton from Bombay (present day Mumbai), indigo and tea from Calcutta (present day Kolkata), rice from Burma, sugar from Java, tobacco from Sumatra, hemp from Manila and silk from Yokohama.

The Bank played a major role in the development of trade with the East following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the extension of telegraph to China in 1871.

In 1957, Chartered Bank bought the Eastern Bank, together with the Ionian Bank’s Cyprus Branches and established a presence in the Gulf.

About the Standard Bank (established in 1862):

The Standard Bank was founded in London in 1862 by John Paterson from the Cape Colony in South Africa and commenced business in Port Elizabeth in 1863.

The Bank was prominent in financing the development of the diamond fields of Kimberley from the 1870s.

In 1886, it expanded its network further North to the new town of Johannesburg, when gold was discovered there.

Later, by 1953, the Bank expanded in Southern, Central and Eastern Africa and had established around 600 offices.

In 1962, the Bank was renamed Standard Bank Limited and a subsidiary was registered in South Africa under the parent’s previous name – Standard Bank of South Africa.

In 1965, it merged with the Bank of West Africa, expanding its operations into Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

About Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) – a brief about the merged entity (wef 1969):

In 1969, the Chartered Bank merged with the Standard Bank of Africa to emerge as the “Standard Chartered Bank”.

Standard Chartered PLC is a British multinational banking company with its headquarters in London.

In 1987, Standard Chartered Bank sold its stake in the Standard Bank, which now operates as a separate entity.

Presence Worldwide and in India:

Worldwide presence:

Standard Chartered Bank has emerged as one of the leading International Banking Groups in the world, with staff strength of over 87,000 employees representing 115 Nationalities. Presently, it operates in some of the World’s most dynamic markets. It has a wide range of products and services for personal and business customers with over 1200 branches (including subsidiaries, associates and joint ventures) with offices and outlets spread across 71 countries. It has rapidly built up its niche as a universal bank with operations in consumer, corporate and institutional banking and treasury services etc.

Standard Chartered Bank is the trend-setter in emerging markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, with its core strengths of a wide range of products and services, diversity in culture and a very balanced approach. It is committed to building a sustainable business over the long-term.

During the 21st Century, Standard Chartered Bank made two large acquisitions in the history of the Bank – the purchase of Grindlays Bank from the ANZ Group and American Express Bank – among others.

Interestingly, despite its UK base, it does not conduct retail banking business in the UK and around 90% of its profits come from Africa, Asia and the Middle East, its traditional “hunting grounds”.

Presence in India:

Historically:

Historically, it opened its first branch in Calcutta (present day Kolkata) followed by its branch in Bombay (present day Mumbai) in April 1858, in its earlier “avatar” (meaning “incarnation”, or, in the case of SCB “incorporation”) as “The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China”.

The Bank in the initial phase capitalised on the growing trade of cotton in the State of Bombay (present day Mumbai) and contributed immensely to the development of trade with the Orient.

Presently, Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) is India’s first and largest International Bank.

Present Day:

Standard Chartered Bank in India has 99 branches and 234 ATMs in 42 cities spread out across the country and is currently India’s largest International Bank. It has played a significant role in the history of the banking industry in India.

Innovative Banking initiatives in India:

The Bank is credited with several “industry firsts” and product innovations, including the first Global Credit Card in India, the first Photo Card and the first Picture Card et al. These innovations, together with excellent delivery mechanisms and customer service have gone a long way in helping the Bank expand its customer base substantially.

Community Services in India –  Pro-active Bank:

For over 150 years, Standard Chartered Band has made a real difference to the communities/people of India with a special focus on health, education and environment, through its array of banking schemes and through its Community/Innovative Banking Schemes, benefitting millions of citizens.

The Bank has launched the “Seeing is Believing” (SiB) community initiative, along with International Agency for the Prevention of Blondness (IAPB) on avoidable blindness in 2003 which has benefitted over 1.79 million people in India alone. In India, this initiative covers part of Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata et al. The initiative focuses on development of sustainable eye care services in the less advantaged areas of around 20 cities.

Sponsoring Sports and Corporate Awards, including in India:

Our experience in Ghana:

When we visited Ghana in February 2013, we found out that Standard Chartered Bank was operating close to 30 Branches in the country including a few in Kumasi, the nearest large city close to Krobo village in Mampong district, where we were staying. When we went to Kumasi, we sought some help from the staff of one of SCB branches near the place where our vehicle was parked, who were most helpful in giving us guidance/banking assistance, much as everyone else we met at Ghana. We also learnt that Standard Chartered Bank operates in several countries in Africa, where the Standard Bank of Africa (which merged with Chartered Bank in 1969) had deep roots for more than 150 years serving the economic and social interests of African countries through its innovative Banking programmes.

Commemorating 150 years of Banking in India in 2008: A commemorative postage stamp in the denomination of Rs.5/- was issued by the Department of Posts, India on 17.11.2008:

In 2008, SCB celebrated the 150th Year of its Operations in India when it opened its first branch in Calcutta (present day Kolkata) followed by its branch in Bombay (present day Mumbai) in April 1858.

The Department of Posts had issued a commemorative postage Stamp on the heritage Standard Chartered Bank Building in Mumbai which is depicted on the Commemorative stamp as a symbol of Standard Chartered Bank’s stellar services in India over the years:

The above is an image of a se-tenant of Rs.5/- stamps issued on the occasion depicting the Standard Chartered Bank Building in Mumbai. Mentioned on the Rs.5/- stamp is “Dharohar Bhavan – Standard Chartered Bank” (in Hindi) and “Heritage Building – Standard Chartered Bank” (in English) and “150 years”. The year of issue is shown as “2008”.

The Heritage Chartered Bank Building in Mumbai:

This building is located in one of the most prosperous/prestigious areas of Mumbai and is one of the finest buildings designed by Fredrick William Stevens, an acclaimed architect of his time (the nineteenth century).

The Standard Chartered Bank building in India follows an “Italianate neo-Classical style” and is one of the two buildings in India, which has been executed in this particular style, the other being the Standard Chartered Bank building in Kolkata, both of which are in operation since April 1858.

The building was finally completed in 1902, two years after Stevens passed away. It was Stevens’ last project and the floor plan is quite complex.

                                     Image of the pediment

The pediment (triangular upper part of the front of a classical building, typically surmounting a portico), bears the Coat of Arms of England and symbols from the three countries the Bank represented in the initial years.

The above is an image of the First Day Cover (FDC) issued on the occasion. It shows several Standard Chartered Bank buildings and is titled “150 Years” and “Dharohar Bhawan” – Standard Chartered Bank (in Hindi) and “Heritage Building – Standard Chartered Bank” in English). The FDC shows the Rs.5/- stamp depicting the Mumbai Standard Chartered Bank Heritage Building. The Cancellation is of New Delhi GPO and is titled “Dharohar Bhawan Standard Chartered Bank (in Hindi) and “Heritage Building Standard Chartered Bank" (in English). The Cancellation is dated 17.11.2008 and exhibits the logo of Standard Chartered Bank.

I have acquired this First Day Cover (FDC) from the epostoffice, New Delhi at a cost of Rs.100/- for my collection. It has been delivered to me on 19.01.2017.
