Establishment of the Allahabad High Court:

The High Court of Allahabad was established by a Royal Charter as the “High Court of Judicature for the North-Western Province” on 17.03.1866 and was seated at Agra.

At that time, it comprised of the First Chief Justice Walter Morgan and five other Judges – Alexander Ross, William Edwards, William Roberts, Francis Boyle Parson and Charles Arthur Turner.

The High Court had its first sitting on 18.06.1866 at Agra. Thereafter, it was shifted to Allahabad in 1869 in the building on Queen’s Road (presently called Sarojini Naidu Road). The building in which the High Court is seated at present was designed by the architect Frank Lishman and its foundation stone was laid on 18.03.1911.

The main building with a dome shaped pedimented centre, engrailed arches, stone balustrades and arcaded wings is a blend of Eastern and Western architectural styles.

The construction of the building was completed on 27.11.1916 and the building was inaugurated by the then Governor General of India.

Lucknow Bench:

The construction of the building in which the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court is located began in 1900 and its architecture incorporates the best Rajasthani and Mughal architecture with domes and pillars.

New Name:

The High Court got its new name “High Court of Judicature at Allahabad” through supplementary Letters Patent on 11.03.1919.

On 26.07.1948, the Chief Court of Awadh/Oudh merged with the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad under the United Provinces High Court (Amalgamation) Order, 1948.

The first Indian “Vakils”:

At the time when the High Court shifted from Agra to Allahabad, the Bar was composed of barristers of English and Irish Bar, the advocates of Scotland and Indian “Vakils” (meaning “Barristers or advocates”). Ram Prasad, J.N. Chaudhary, Sundar Lal, Moti Lal Nehru were the first batch of “Vakils” to be admitted to the status of advocates by the Chief Justice in 1896.

The first Lady Advocate:

The Allahabad High Court took the lead when other High Courts rejected applications for enrolment of women advocates/lawyers, by enrolling Cornelia Sorabji as the first Indian Lady Vakil of Allahabad High court on 24.08.1921, by a decision of the English Committee of the Court (as the administrative Committee was then called).

In 1995, a retiring room for Lady Advocates was inaugurated and was named as the Cornelia Sorabji Hall.

The Registry:

The Registrar General is the Administrative Head of the High Court. He is assisted by several Officers and Officials collectively known as the Registry of the Court including Registrars, Joint registrars, Dy. Registrars, Asst. Registrars, Section Officers, Review Officers, Asstt. Review Officers et al.

The Museum:

The High Court has its own Museum both at Allahabad and Lucknow with a rich collection of judgments, deeds, photographs, dress, furniture and the original charter of Queen Victoria dated 17.03.1866 by which the High Court was created and established.

Present Day:

The High Court had started functioning with six Judges and at present this number has grown to a sanctioned strength of 90 Permanent and 70 Additional Judges, making a total of 160 Judges, the largest number of Judges in the country.

Starting from Walter Morgan, the High Court has had a total of 45 Chief Justices so far.

The High Court of Allahabad has the distinction of having given the country five Chief Justices of India so far.

The Bar of the High Court in the beginning i.e. in 1866 consisted of 6 Advocates, a number which has swelled to about 15000 at present, as per the rolls maintained by the Registry of the High Court.

The first Government Advocate/Counsel to be appointed for the North West Provinces, William Jardin was nominated in 1869-70 and this tradition of appointing Government Counsels at the Allahabad High Court has continued ever since.

The Advocates of the High Court at the Principal Seat at Allahabad are grouped in two different recognised Associations viz., High Court Bar Association and Advocate’s Association.

The Advocates at High court, Lucknow Bench have their own recognised Bar Association in the name of Avadh/Oudh Bar Association.

A Mediation and Reconciliation Centre has been established in the High Court at both Allahabad and Lucknow for persons willing to settle their disputes amicably by negotiations.

The High Court has made full use of the digital media and has uploaded copies of Judgements and Orders on the Internet immediately after delivery from 2009 onwards.

A mammoth task of digitalisation of all the files has been undertaken by the High Court. Processes are in place to make the entire work paperless by adopting e-Filing and also by running e-Courts.

The High Court celebrated its Centenary in 1966.

In 2016, the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad is celebrating the 150th Anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of its establishment.

Posted on 11.07.2016:

I have today received a two coin Proof Quality Coin set on 150 years of the Allahabad High Court from the Mumbai Mint containing a Rs.150/- Quaternary silver coin and a Rs.5/- coin.

The cover of the two coin album titled “Illahabad Ucchh Nyayalaya Ka 150 Van Varshikotsav Smarak Sikke (1866-2016)” (in Hindi) and “150th Anniversary of Allahabad High Court Commemorative Coin (in English).

Notice that the printers of this album have “forgotten” that this is a “two coin set” – while they have rightly mentioned “Sikke” (meaning “coins”) in the Hindi title, they have only mentioned “coin”, instead of “coins” in the English title through a careless oversight. This kind of an “error” is not expected from one of the India Government Mints, particularly the Mumbai Mint.

Seen on the Cover is a picture of the Allahabad High Court, with an open volume of the Constitution of India, before it.

The inner pages 2 and 3 of the coin album.

Page 2 gives a brief description of the history of the Allahabad High Court and mentions:

“The High Court of Allahabad, a glorious temple of justice of the British-Era, was established by a Royal Charter as the High Court of Judicature for the North Western Province on 17th March 1866 and was seated at Agra.
