286)  Vasantrao Srinivassa Sinai Dempo: Commemorating his Birth Centenary by issue of Commemorative stamps in the denomination of Rs.5/- by the Department of Posts, India on 04.03.2016:

About Vencatexa Sinai Dempo or Vasantrao Sinai Srinivassa – 04.03.1916 -09.11.2000):

Born on 04.03.1916, he grew up at his family home at Calapur (Santa Cruz, Goa) in family traditions steeped in religiosity and orthodox rituals from which his staunch piety towards his family deities and reverence for the Pontiff of the Monastic School to whose sect he belonged, were inculcated in him.

He studied Marathi, Portuguese and English and during his growing years, learnt about harnessing business opportunities through his family businesses. Generations of land-owning, shipping, trading in Agricultural produce and underwriting had led to the Dempo family being esteemed highly for their integrity and also for their social responsibility.

Vasantrao’s genius kept alive and strengthened the glorious family traditions, while pioneering new lines and new practices of business.

An astute Businessman:

Commencing trading in commodities sourced overseas, Vasantrao made available a wealth of choices to the Goan consumer.

Casting about for business opportunities, he showed great foresight in recognising the potential for iron ore mining in Goa. Acquiring mining concessions in the late 1930s and early 1940s, he set up V.S. Dempo & Co. Pvt. Ltd., the Group’s Flagship Company in 1941, assisted by his brother, Vaikunthrao S. Dempo.

The Company developed into a major export house in addition to becoming the Region’s premier mining and processing concern.

Acquiring the ore-rich mine at Bicholim, till today Goa’s largest, he set up Dempo Mining Corporation Pvt. Ltd., the Flagship’s subsidiary, a few years later.

Recognising the vulnerability of Europe-oriented exports through the Suez Canal, Vasantrao looked far eastwards instead and commenced exporting to Japan, in particular to Nippon Steel, starting a long term business relationship that still endures even today, over half a century later.

He invested in transhipper vessels on contracts with international corporate giants like Krupp. He did so, correctly, foreseeing the logistical scale of operations involved in the undertaking. His iron resolve rode the Company out of the pre-Liberation naval blockade of Goa.

The years following Goa’s Liberation, were those of consolidation and expansion, when his son and eventual successor, Vasudeva V. Dempo, joined in assisting him in apprenticeship that saw newer lines of activity at the House of Dempo.

Manufacture of calcined petroleum coke, marine paints and baby foods, newspaper publishing, shipping, ship-building, civil contracting, real estate development, travel services, automobile dealerships and stevedoring were some of the other activities into which the Dempos generated business interests.

Educational, Social and Sports related activities:

Vasantrao set the foundations for higher education in the newly liberated Goa.

He patronised Goa’s most consistently excelling soccer club (Dempo Sports Club, which is a football Club based in Panjim, Goa, owned and sponsored by the Dempo Group of Companies. Popularly known as “the whites”, the team constantly  participates in all the National Football Championships and has gained immense popularity in the last four decades of its existence) and supported charitable causes while exerting his influence in promoting Goan industry.

Awards and Recognition:

In 1990, he was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Excellence.

In 1991, honouring him for his efforts in Nation-building and for his exemplary services to the industry, the Government of India conferred upon him the civilian award – Padmashri.

For enhancing India’s prestige and contributing towards national development, he was given an Award by the London based Non Resident Indians Institute.

The Rotary club of Panjim awarded him the “Ambassador of Goodwill” honour.

He was also awarded the Shiromani Institute’s Award for National Integration.

Associated with several important Institutions, Boards and Committees:

He was much sought after as an advisor by a number of institutions and sat on several highly regarded Committees, Boards and Bodies.

He was Chairman of the Indo-Portuguese Trade Council and a member of the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping for India, the American Bureau of Shipping’s Technical Committee and the Indo-Japan Business Cooperation Committee. He also served as the President of the Goan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

His legacy:

By the time of his passing away on 09.11.2000, he had built a huge business empire and had ensured a place for himself in India’s industrial history and the hearts and minds of his countrymen, particularly the Goans. He was a captain of industry who is recognised as one of the few makers of modern Goa. A philanthropist without equal, an educationist without parallel, Vasantrao was as much known for his aristocratic bearing as for his game-changing industrial exploits in the Group’s Flagship activity – mining and export of iron ore.

He was a man of great charm and enormous dignity.

In 2007, the Dempo Group published a special issue of its in-house journal, “Kalpavriksha” which was almost entirely devoted to the life & works of Vasantrao.

The Dempo Group has been a part of Goan history for over half a millennium now and has carried forward Vasantrao’s vision and has strived to emphasize his core values – Ethics, Customer delight, Quality and Social Responsibility.

Birth Centenary Celebrations:

As part of the Birth Centenary celebrations of Vasantrao, apart from the Commemorative Postage stamp of Rs.5/- issued by the Department of Posts, India, on him, the inauguration of the new Vasantrao Dempo Higher Secondary School of Science, Commerce and Arts at the new Cujira Integrated Educational Complex in Bambolim took place as Education was very close to his heart.

He is one of the few Goans to have the rare distinction of having a postage stamp released in his honour.
