364) Shekhawati and Warli Paintings: Commemorative stamps brought out by the Department of Posts, India, in 2012:  (Part I) Warli Paintings:

For my post on Shekhawati paintings, please click on the following link: About Shekhawati paintings

The above is an image of a miniature sheet of stamps depicting two stamps Rs.5/-, depicting a Warli Painting and Rs.20/-, depicting a Shekhawati painting.

The Miniature sheet bears the inscription “Shekhawati region of Rajasthan is famous for frescos depicting a gamut of subjects from mythological stories to local legends of battles and hunts.

The tribal homes in Maharashtra are decorated with Warli paintings depicting symbolic patterns drawn on a background of red mud to seek the continued benevolence of gods.”

Warli Art – its genesis and concentration:

Warli paintings are a Tribal Art Form traditionally created by the “Adivasis” (meaning “Tribals”) belonging to the “Warli” and “Malkhar Koli” tribes found in the northern outskirts of Mumbai (in the Indian State of Maharashtra). These tribes are concentrated mainly in the villages comprising Dahanu, Jawhar, Mokhada, Palghar, Talasari and Vikramgarh in the North Sahyadri Ranges in Maharashtra.

It is believed that Warli Art form dates back to the 10th Century AD.  These tribals have been propagators of a tradition which originated sometime in the Neolithic period between 3,000 BC and 2,500 BC.

These mural paintings are similar to those made in the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka (in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh) between 10,000 BC and 500 BC.

We visited Jawhar and the neighbouring villages where Warli Art thrives, in August 2012 and saw a Warli Art School, an exhibition and interacted with many Warli artists. It was a revelation, learning so much about the tribals and their art. We bought some artefacts like coasters, wall clocks, key-boards,  paper holders, T-shirts, serving trays etc. Even after giving gifts to our friends, some of the items still in our possession are represented at the bottom of this post.

Recent recognition and popularity:

Warli Art came into recognition and popularity during the early 1970s.

Warli Art follows Geometric patterns:

The Warli Art Form employs extremely rudimentary graphic forms – Circles, Triangles and Squares. Every symbol of Warli art has its own meaning and language.

The Circle and the Triangle come from their observation of nature, the Circle represents the Sun and the Moon, while the Triangle is derived from mountains and pointed trees.

Triangular humans and animals, with stick-like hands and legs, geometrical designs with rows of dots and dashes are drawn on the mud walls of the huts of tribals.

Human and animal forms are represented by two triangles joined at the tip – the upper triangle depicts the trunk and the lower triangle depicts the pelvis. Their precarious equilibrium symbolises the balance of the universe and of the couple and has the advantage of animating the bodies.

The Square indicates a sacred ritual enclosure or a piece of land.

In Warli Art, it was rare to see a straight line. A series of dots and dashes make one line. Only modern Warli artists have begun to draw in straight lines, primarily for commercial purposes.

The most important aspect of these paintings is that they do not depict any mythological characters or images of deities, instead the Art Form focusses on social life. Representations of human beings and animals, along with scenes from daily life are created in loosely knit rhythmic patterns.

Warli Art usually depicts scenes of human figures engaged in activities like hunting, dancing, sowing and harvesting.

Some Art themes and Styles:

The sacred nature of the trees is suggested by their soaring heights in relation to humans and their domesticated animals. Dances of spring and budding trees and meeting of young couples are reflected in the Art Form as well.

Nature is represented from the gigantic to the smallest creatures and plants.

Warli paintings also narrate stories of poverty, suffering of human beings and animals, floods and other crisis situations.

The vivid themes capture the life around the village and cover day to day activities of the village folk.

The themes include tribal people expressing themselves in vivid styles through paintings which are made on the walls of their houses. It was a popular mode/method of transmitting folklore, customs, and traditions etc. through symbolic expressions from generation to generation, as education had not percolated down to these areas/tribes. The figures and traditional motifs are repetitive and highly symbolic. The tribals communicate through their paintings and their life style and passion for nature are depicted with utmost detail.

Warli paintings are ascetic in nature:

The central motif in these ritual paintings is a variety of activities, surrounded by scenes portraying humans, birds, hunting, fishing and farming, festivals and dances, trees and animals.  Men, animals and trees form a loose, rhythmic pattern across the entire imagery and groups of people dancing around a person playing the music, dancing peacocks etc. This results in a light swinging and swirling movement, describing day to day activities.

Warli paintings are strangely ascetic, unlike other folk paintings of India which consist of myriad primary colours in such abundance. Instead, Warli art is painted in white on an austere brown surface decorated with occasional dots in red and yellow. This first impression of sobriety is countered by the ebullience of the themes depicted, which are remarkably social in nature.

It is believed that these paintings invoke the powers and blessings of the Gods.

The Tarpa Dance:

.One of the central striking aspects of many Warli paintings is the “Tarpa Dance” – the “Tarpa” being a trumpet like musical instrument which is played in turns by different men.

Men and women entwine their hands and move in a circle around the Tarpa player. The dancers follow the Tarpa player, turning and moving as he turns, never turning their back to the Tarpa.

Men and women in spiral form and concentric designs symbolise the Circle of Life. The harmony and balance depicted in these paintings signifies the harmony and balance of the universe.
Images of Warli paintings depicting the Tarpa dance

Some other popular Warli painting themes:

 “Lagnacha Chauk orChaukhat:

Usually these Warli paintings are done during marriage ceremonies and are called “Lagnacha chauk” (meaning “marriage paintings”).
An image of a Lagnacha Chauk Warli painting

 “Devchauk:

Inside a “Devchauk” painting is depicted “Palaghata”, the mother goddess, symbolising fertility.

These are ritual paintings, the central motif in each painting being the square, inside which one may find the “mother goddess”, symbolising fertility.

More importantly, male gods are unusual among the Warli tribals and are normally related to spirits which have taken human shape.

Painting Walls of Huts with Warli Art forms – traditionally done by the women-folk:

Warli Art is mainly created by the women-folk of these tribes, painted white on mud walls, charcoal and mud based surfaces using natural dyes with a series of dots in red and yellow. Their linear and monochromatic hues and sequences are beautifully executed and resemble pre-historic cave paintings in their style of execution.

The paintings are usually done inside the huts. The walls are made of a mixture of branches, earth and cow-dung, making a red ochre background for the wall paintings. The Warli women-folk use only white for their paintings. Their white pigment is a mixture of rice paste and water with gum as a binding. They use a bamboo stick chewed at the end to make it as supple as a paintbrush.

These paintings are done on special occasions such as weddings or harvests etc.

Warli Art today – Integration with Modern Concepts, while retaining the Traditional Art Forms:

Today, Warli artists have broadened their horizons and are creating paintings outside their traditional concepts, particularly for exhibitions and commercial purposes.

Warli artists have adapted to modern times and started using straight lines in their paintings and using modern elements such as bicycles, cars, buildings, computers, space-craft, trains etc. apart from their traditional motifs. They are also painting on paper and cloth.

The tribals were mainly forest dwellers but have now made a gradual transition towards integrating with the mainstream city dwelling populations.

Nevertheless, they have retained their indigenous customs and traditions and adhere to their age-old themes and motifs which reflect their tribal culture. Warli art has now become a huge lucrative business.

Warli Art  has gained tremendous popularity and are a much coveted commercial art form with Warli Art being made on tea-coasters, drawing room paintings, key-chains/boards, pen & pencil stands, T-shirts, coffee/tea-mugs etc.

My favourite T-shirt purchased at the Warli Art School at Jawhar Warli village showing a Tarpa player and dancers

A serving tray in our collection showing a village scene - a hut with a ladder leading to the attic, with women grinding grain in a pestel, a storage bin,  two trees, a huntsman going out with his dog, a cart being driven into the village, a lone village dweller walking on foot and a bird in flight overhead

One side of a napkin holder shows the symbolism of a forest greenery/cover and a deer moving in the forest cover. The smiling sun napkin is my favourite design and I have many pieces and variations of it in my collection which I do not let anyone use
The other face of this napkin holder shows three individuals going about their work in the village
An image of a coaster cart in our home collection of Warli artefacts. It depicts a man going on a hunt with his two dogs
The image on this coaster is that af a hut with a ladder leading up to the loft
This image is that of a man returning home with his two dogs with his "kill"
The image on this coaster is that of two women drawing water from a well, while a third woman arranges the water carrying pots
The image on this coaster is that of a couple warming their hands on a fire in their courtyard. A bamboo fence demarcates the privacy of their courtyard
A Tarpa musician leads a small group of dancers who are facing him
This is an image of two women flattening corn in a pestle
A coaster holder with its complement of six wooden coasters
Two women weaving a basket is represented here
                        Four dancers practicing their moves
Two women drawing water from a well, with four water=pitchers kept on the side
A couple moving towards their hut
A man going with his dog in the forest to hunt
A Tarpa player playing his music
This is a paper holder in our Warli collection. The image shows a couple - man and woman returning from shopping or after collecting fruits/vegetables from the forest/garden. The baskets represent a modern day influence on Warli Art
A Wall Clock showing Warli art in our collection.
A Warli painted three-legged stool in our collection. It shows a Tarpa musician playing on the instrument and dancers. The two figures in the front and back of the Tarpa player are unusual, as the dancers traditionally face the Tarpa player and never show his back to him

Warli paintings also featured in a Coca-Cola advertisement titled “Come Home on Diwali” in 2010, as a tribute to the recognition of the distinct lifestyle of the Warli tribe.

The following extract has been abridged from Sumita's post on our trip to Ratnagiri and Jawhar and neighbouring Warli tribal villages in August 2012 on our blog "Footloose" is as under:

"We made a offbeat detour to Jawhar about 166 km from Mumbai, known as the Mahabaleshwar of Thane district. It was the capital of the tribal king Jayaba Mukne but what attracted us there was Warli, a tribal art form. The whole village is into this art, made with natural dyes.
The drive up the ghat was truly scenic.
A passing scene from a moving car

A grey Francolin we stopped to click on the way.

Warli motifs
We were really fascinated by the beautiful things made in the village and ended up buying a lot of items. Here are some of the things we still have after gifting to all our friends and relatives.
