The Lalit Kala Akademi (LKA) or National Academy of Art:

This is India’s National Academy of Fine Arts which was set up on 11.03.1954 at New Delhi by the Government of India in the nature of an NGO (non Government Organisation) funded by the Union Ministry of Culture.

It was inaugurated by the then Minister for Education – Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who, inter alia,  stated in his inaugural speech “ The Akademi must work to preserve the glorious traditions of the past and enrich them by the work of our modern artists. It must also seek to improve standards and refine taste…”.

This has in effect become the guiding principle of the Lalit Kala Akademi.

Since April 2015, the Government of India has taken over control of Lalit Kala Akademi.

Aims and Objectives of the Lalit Kala Akademi (LKA):

The Lalit Kala Akademi’s objective is to promote and propagate understanding of Indian Art in the country and abroad. Since its establishment it has been serving the cause of promoting the creative endeavours of Indian artists and bringing their arts for viewing and encouragement to a large number of people, thereby playing an important role in defining and redefining the sensibility of an entire culture falling under the visual arts spectrum.

The LKA has provided yeoman service to the visual arts by establishing, preserving and documenting visual art of the best forms which in turn reflect the vitality, complexity and unfolding patterns of ancient, modern and contemporary arts in India.

The Lalit Kala Akademi has been showcasing and encouraging Indian Contemporary Art/Visual Art since its inception in 1954.

It has continued with its tradition of being the “keeper” of the historicity of Indian Art and its interaction with contemporary art practices worldwide.

The Akademi has been teaching and encouraging Art education, preservation and promotion of arts of several genres ranging from tribal to classical. It also promotes the study and encouragement of folk, tribal and traditional arts and crafts techniques, preservation and projection of these art forms and organises regional surveys for encouraging surviving indigenous craftsmen, painters and sculptors to keep their traditional art forms alive.

The LKA’s objectives are primarily to encourage and promote study and research in the fields of creative arts like painting, sculpture and graphics and to encourage and coordinate the activities of regional art organisations and Regional Lalit Kala Akademi centres.

It also aims to promote cooperation among artists and art associations and exchange of ideas between various schools and educationists and State Academies, Zonal Cultural Centres and Art Organisations like Faculties of Arts in Universities, Art colleges, schools, art museums, art galleries and art associations.

Awards, Scholarships and Funding assistance:

The Akademi provides scholarships and a fellow programme and sponsors and organises exhibitions and educational programmes in India and Overseas.

The National Art Award is one of the awards and honours in India and Asia awarded by the Lalit Kala Akademi.

The LKA has also established an Artist’s Welfare Trust/Artist’s Aid Fund and Social Security to encourage artists and artisans with their Art forms.

Exhibitions and the Lalit Kala Akademi’s Art Collection of India Masters and prominent Artists:

During the over sixty years of its existence, the LKA has been organising annual exhibitions, Art Fairs (“Kala Melas”), Workshop/Camps etc. It has a reserve of Artists Aid Fund (AAF) and Chairman’s Discretionary Funds to assisting deserving artists/artisans/craftsmen and been encouraging artists by acquiring prize-winning artworks for a price for its general collection for posterity. This collection now includes paintings, sculptures and graphics.

Interestingly, the LKA’s impressive collection presents somewhat of a synoptic history of Indian Art over the past six decades. The collection includes works of eminent artists and masters of Indian Contemporary art like M.F. Husain, F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza, Tyeb Mehta, G.R. Santosh, K.K. Hebbar, V.S. Gaitonde, Dhanraj Bhagat, Dhruv Mistry et al.

The Artworks are preserved and restored as per International Standards on an on-going basis.

On 16.09.2014, Lalit Kala Akademi (LKA) celebrated its 60th year of establishment with an event titled “Spirit of Delhi” where poets and artists showcased their works.

Library and Publications:

The Library was established along with the LKA in 1954.

The LKA publishes and promotes publication of literature on art including monographs, journals etc. and maintains a library covering Indian and World art. It began with 140 titles which included books and bilingual journals on art and has now grown to become a standard reference library having around 9,000 books and volumes on painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, graphic art, architecture which cover a wide range of subjects.

The library also has a great collection of art reproductions and archival records.

The LKA also publishes journals pertaining to Ancient, Contemporary and “Samkaleen periods” and Books, Monographs, Portfolios (Ancient & Contemporary Series), Catalogues (NEA Catalogues, Triennial etc), Reproductions (Ancient Series, Contemporary series etc), a magazine titled “Kala Samvad” etc. The Akademi fosters cultural contacts within India and other countries through art exhibitions, exchange of personnel and art objects etc.

Regional Centres:

Regional Centres of Lalit Kala Akademi have been established at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Lucknow for the development of Art around the country. Camp offices have also been set up at Shimla and Patna.

The Regional Centres provide a work-place for artists viz community workshops for all disciplines of visual art. These community workshops provide infrastructural facilities to the artist community of the region and gives them equipment and storage facilities, which is rather difficult for the artists to procure for them owing to exorbitant costs.

These centres also conduct programmes/events like exhibitions, Regional camps and provide facilities of galleries to the artists of the Region and other States as well.

Lucknow Regional Centre (LRC) of Lalit Kala Akademi:

The Lucknow Regional Centre was conceived for providing working facilities to artists who did not have their own workshops and studios. Phase one of the building was set up in 1983. Later, the second phase of the building was completed in 2004.

The LRC presently has first class three modern Art Galleries in different dimensions. It also has an administrative section, publication sale counter and a library which has been turned into “Print of Archives”.

A painting exhibition at the Lalit Kala Akademi, Regional Centre, Lucknow:

In 2011, my sister-in-law Paromita was one of the three artists who had held a Painting Exhibition at the Lalit Kala Akademi, Lucknow. She was one of the three artists/sculptors who participated in the Exhibition, the second one being from Lucknow, while the third one was from Kolkata. She has taken up this hobby only after her retirement from active service. More details about her Exhibition can be accessed at the following link on a Post put up by Sumita in her blog on Art – “justartmusings.blogspot.com”:

While at the exhibition, there were news-media Reporters/photographers who have written/compiled the undernoted piece. This is the first and only time that I have appeared on Page 3 of any newspaper:

Interestingly, the reporters wanted to know whether I was an “art critic”. I don’t know why but I said “yes”. Having said that, I went on to research and write the following piece on the art/skill/process of making “stoneware pottery sculptures”, after discussing the process with the well known sculptor herself, on Sumita’s blog “fabhobbies.blogspot.com” where I have given my own interpretations of the sculptor’s work:

"Nice write-up. I only wish that it encourages interest in young people for fine arts to not only elevate them to a higher level of existence but also discourage the scourge of brutality increasing in our society both in discourse and acts of violence against women and other weak and neglected sections of our society."

"I think Arts ...like painting should be turned in " sports " and encouraged as an hobby rather than devalue it into a certification programme , with participants only aiming for grades."

    1. Another thought provoking suggestion,, Satyajit. There are several painting competitions held on important days/ flower shows/festivals etc.. Even Stamp design competitions and coin design competitions are becoming popular all over the world, with the best entries being engraved/printed on coins/stamps.. Even in India, this year quite a few stamps with themes like Children's Day, Picnic, Swacchh Bharat Mission etc were thrown open to the general public. This not only encourages talent (including that of citizens who have not undergone any "formal training"), it also creates an awareness about the various initiatives which the present focus is on. The "Re" symbol was also selected through one such competition, as was the Swacchh Bharat logo etc.
