430) Sundarbans (Part III): A set of 48 Post Cards issued by the Karnataka Postal Circle of India Post in 2015:

International Bio-Diversity Decade – 2011 to 2020:

Bio-diversity is important at every level. We live in a complex system where every living being depends on every other in some way or the other. It is important that we actively pursue a clear and current understanding of the system in which we live in order to sustain it.

As part of creating awareness towards the above mission, the Karnataka Postal Circle has brought out this set of 48 post cards on the bio-diversity of the Sundarban and the urgent need to protect it to maintain the ecological balance of this beautiful bounty of nature and protecting the diverse creatures that live in it from extinction.

The Sundarbans

The Sundarban is a contiguous natural region in India and Bangladesh formed on the delta of the Ganges (or Ganga River), Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers. It is the largest estuarine mangrove forest in the world.
The Sundarban is a National Park, Tiger Reserve, Biosphere Reserve, UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar Wetlands. It is also home to a variety of bird, reptile and invertebrate species, including the salt-water crocodile.

Description of pictures on the last 16 individual Post cards out of the set of 48 Post cards:

Changeable Hawk-eagle or Crested Hawk-eagle (Nisaetus cirrhatus):

This is a relatively slender forest eagle with some sub-species (especially N.c. limnaetus) being dimorphic giving it the name “changeable”.

It breeds in the Indian sub-continent, mainly in India and Sri Lanka. It keeps a sharp lookout perched on some high tree standing near a forest clearing.
Masked Finfoot (Heliopais personatus):

This is an aquatic bird from the fresh and brackish wetlands of the Eastern Indian Sub-Continent, Indochina, Malaysia and Indonesia. It is an underwater specialist with a long neck, a striking sharp beak and lobed feet which are green. It is adept out of water and will forage on the banks as well. Finfoots are not gregarious and are usually seen singly or in pairs. They are very secretive.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Endangered (EN)”.
Lesser Adjutant Stork (Leptoptilos javanicus):

This is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconlidae. In India, they are mainly distributed in the Eastern States of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar. It stalks around wetlands feeding mainly on fish, frogs, reptiles and large invertebrates. They may also take small birds and rodents, particularly during the breeding season. They are solitary except during the breeding season when they form loose colonies.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Vulnerable (VU)”.
Rose Ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri):

It is a gregarious tropical Afro-Asian parakeet species that has an extremely large range. It is one of the few parrot species that has successfully adapted to living in disturbed habitats. It has withstood the onslaught of urbanisation and deforestation. As a popular pet species, escaped birds have colonised a number of cities around the world.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Least Concern (LC)”.
Tiger Fence:

In a bid to reduce human-tiger conflict, polypropylene net-fencing has been erected over an area of 90 kms in the Sundarbans. The straying of Royal Bengal Tigers into villages around the Sundarbans forest has seen a dramatic decline after erection of net-fencing on the forest-village inter-face.
Ruddy Kingfisher (Halcyon coromanda):

This is a medium-sized tree Kingfisher which is widely distributed in East and Southeast Asia. Ruddy Kingfishers inhabit forested areas from the temperate to tropical zones, often in thick jungles and rainforests. Due to its preference for heavily forested areas, the Kingfisher’s high descending call is more often heard than the bird itself is seen.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Least Concern (LC)”.
Mangrove Pitta (Pitta megarhyncha):

This is a species of passerine bird in the Pittidae family native to Southeast Asia and South Asia. Its range extends from India to Malaysia and Indonesia. It is found in mangrove and nipa palm forests where it feeds on crustaceans, molluscs and insects. Its call, sometimes rendered as “wieuw-wieuw”, is sung from a high perch on a mangrove tree.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Near Threatened (NT)”.
Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta):

These are native to Northern India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Southern China and some neighbouring areas. It has tolerance of a broad range of habitats from grasslands to and forested areas, also human settlements.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Least Concern (LC)”.

Net Making:

The fisher-folk of Sunderbans have been making and mending their own nets for generations. It is an enjoyable and productive pastime. The ones that are commonly hand-woven are the cast-nets usually operated by one person.
Jungle Cat (Felis chaus) in Bonbibir Shack:

This is a medium-sized cat native to Asia. In India it is the most common of the small cats. The Jungle Cat has equal-sized claws on both fore and hind legs, which allow climbing down trees as easily as climbing up. It prefers wetland environments with tall grasses or reeds to hide in and is often seen in the neighbourhood of villages.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Least Concern (LC)”.

In this picture is seen a single jungle tom relaxing in a waterside Bonbibir shack (the shack belonging to the Queen of the Forest usually kept in the form of a statue) in one of the inhabited islands of the Indian Subcontinent.
Loten’s Sunbird or Long Billed Sunbird (Cinnyris lotenius):

This bird is endemic to Peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Its long bill distinguishes it from the similar purple sunbird that is found in the same areas. Like other sunbirds, it feeds on small insects and builds characteristic hanging nests.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Least Concern (LC)”.
Spotted Deer or “Cheetal” (Axis axis):

This species of deer inhabits wooded regions of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and in small numbers in Pakistan.

It is found in large numbers in dense deciduous or semi/evergreen forests and open grasslands.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “Least Concern (LC)”.
Sundari” (Heritiera fomes):

This is a medium sized evergreen tree. The roots are shallow and spreading and send up pneumatophores. The trunk develops buttresses and is grey with vertically fissured bark. It is native to coastal regions of the Indo-Pacific, its range extending from the east coast of India through Bangladesh and Malaysia to Myanmar and Thailand.

Compared to other species of mangrove, it grows in less saline environments and on drier ground that gets inundated by the tide only infrequently. Its local name “Sundari” gives the Sundarbans region its name. Timber produced from this tree is hard, fine-grained, tough and elastic. The tree is grown commercially in plantations. The bark of the tree has medicinal uses.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists this tree species as “Endangered (EN)”.
Waterways:

The Sundarbans is intersected by a complex network of rivers, tidal creeks, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests. The inter-connected network of waterways makes almost every corner of the forest accessible by boat during high tides.

Dobanki Camp:

The Dobanki Camp in Sundarbans presents one with a unique experience of watching wildlife from its Canopy Walk which is about half a kilometre long and is at a height of about 20 feet from the ground. There is a watch tower and a fresh water pond. Thus, there is a good chance of spotting a tiger here. Spotted deer, monitors and raptors are commonly seen.

Protection against tiger attacks:

Sundarbans tiger attacks were documented as early as the 1600s and legend has it that tigers every year claimed hundreds of lives. It is generally believed that this predator only attacks people from behind, workers in the mangrove forests started wearing masks on the backs of their heads. This trick seems to have worked and tiger attackshave substantially reduced.
