397) National Postal Week: 9th to 15th October 2016: Special Covers issued by India Post during the week of celebration:


World Post Day:

World Post Day is celebrated every year on 9th October to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital - Berne.

9th October was declared as World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, this day is celebrated annually all over the globe to highlight the importance and significance of postal services.

India Post celebrated the National Postal Week fro. 09 to 15 October 2016:

India Post celebrated the National Postal Week from 9th to 15th October 2016 with a view to create awareness about the role of the postal sector in the lives of the citizens and business and its contribution to the social and economic development of the country. The celebration focuses on generating a greater awareness about India Post’s role and activities among the public and media at the national level.

As part of the National Postal Week, India Post celebrated the following specific activities:

- World Post Day (including Post Forum meetings, workshops for staff on      soft skills) – 09.10.2016

- Savings Bank Day – 10.10.2016

- ePostoffice – 11.10.2016

- Mail Day – 12.10.2016

-  Philately Day – 13.10.2016

- Postal Life Insurance Day – 14.10.2016

- Business Development Day – 15.10.2016

The benefits of celebrating National Postal Week every year:

The Department of Posts has served every part of the country for over 150 years by providing Mail, Speed Post and Parcel services, Post Office Savings Bank, Postal Life Insurance, Philatelic services by issue of Definitive and Special/Commemorative stamps.

It has also been providing “My Stamp” services to the public at large to generate keen interest of the public at large. The personalisation is achieved by printing a thumb nail photograph of the customers of the image and logos of institutions, or images of art work, heritage buildings, famous tourist places, historical cities, wild-life, other animals and birds etc. alongside the selected Commemorative Postage Stamps.


India Post is sensitive to the changing needs of customers and has introduced several innovative products like Speed Post, Express/Business Parcel, Business Post, ePost, Money Remittance Services, Book Post for periodicals and magazines at concessional rates etc. Utilising its vast network of Post Offices, India Post provides Bill collection facilities under its e-Payment services and it also retails third party products from Post Offices.

It also provides railway tickets reservation services under the Passenger Reservation System of the Indian Railways.

India Post has also set up Automated Mail Processing Centres in major cities like Delhi and Kolkata with a view to create an Automated Mail Grid.

The Automated Mail Processing Centre facilitates the processing of more than 55,000 pieces of mail an hour.

During the National Postal Week, customers, in particular children were encouraged to tour the Automated Mail Processing Centres.

In line with the emerging e-Commerce market, the parcel product has been revamped and Cash on Delivery (CoD) facility has been introduced. State-of-the-Art Parcel Centres have been set up across the country.

India Post is also developing Parcel Network to cater to the needs of e-Commerce companies.

Delivery of Parcels and Express Mail is being mechanised in bigger cities for efficient and quicker delivery.

India Post is in the process of inducting technology through an enterprise wide IT Project which has brought in electronic connectivity and capabilities across more than 150,000 Post Offices for seamless delivery of all mail and financial services.

The Department of Posts, India utilises the full strength of the Post offices to attract more customers, including the younger generation. The personnel also conduct door to door visits and visits to Corporate Houses, with a view to tap all avenues and markets.

Special Covers issued by India Post during the National Postal Week- 2016:



                 Special Cover on World Postal Day - 09.10.2016
The above Special Postal Cover was issued by India Post on 09.10.2016 and is on “WORLD POSTAL DAY”. The images on the left hand side of the Special cover shows an open envelope with an image of the World, with the Indian sub-continent towards the centre.

The Special Cover is inscribed “Vishwa Dak Diwas” (in Hindi) and “WORLD POSTAL DAY” (in English) on the left hand bottom.

The Rs.5/- stamp on the right is titled “BLUE POPPY” which is part of a set of stamps titled “Wildflowers of India” issued by the Department of Posts, India  on the occasion of the 11th Asian Pacific Postal Union Congress in New Delhi from 3rd to 6th September 2013. The Cancellation Stamp is of New Delhi GPO and is inscribed “Vishwa Dak Diwas” (in Hindi) and “WORLD POSTAL DAY” (in English). The Hand stamp shows three envelops travelling by mail to their destination. The Cancellation is dated “09.10.2016”.



             Special Cover on Savings Bank Day - 10.10.2016
The above Special Postal Cover was issued by India Post on “SAVINGS BANK DAY” on 10.10.2016. The images on the left hand side of the Special Cover show inter alia – an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in operation, a Post Office Money Credit Card, A tree with coins of money growing on it, symbolising how small savings can grow into a huge amount of savings. Banknotes in the denominations of RS.1000/- (since demonetised), Rs.50/- Rs.20/- and Rs.10/- and coins in the denomination of Re 1 and Rs.2/- symbolising small savings of currency. The Special Cover is inscribed “Bachat Bank Diwas” (in Hindi) and “SAVINGS BANK DAY” (in English) on the left hand bottom.

The Rs.5/- stamp on the right is titled “HIMALAYAN MINI SUNFLOWER” which is part of a set of stamps titled “Wildflowers of India” issued by the Department of Posts, India  on the occasion of the 11th Asian Pacific Postal Union Congress in New Delhi from 3rd to 6th September 2013. The Cancellation Stamp is of New Delhi GPO and is inscribed “Bachat Bank Diwas” (in Hindi) and “Savings Bank Day” (in English). The Hand stamp also shows a bag of Indian rupee coins. The Cancellation is dated “10.10.2016”.



                  Special Cover on ePostoffice - 11.10.2016
The above Special Postal Cover was issued by India Post on “ePostoffice” on 11.10.2016. The images on the left hand side of the Special Cover show inter alia – Special Covers being booked through a keyboard on the ePostoffice website and an old-fashioned letter box placed alongside, symbolising an automated post office booking through the ePostoffice website. The three yellow wavy lines of the India Post logo are placed just below the inscription “e-POSTOFFICE”. The Special Cover is inscribed “e-Dakghar” (in Hindi) and “e-POSTOFFICE” (in English) on the left hand bottom.

The Rs.5/- stamp on the right is titled “GLOBE THISTLE” which is part of a set of stamps titled “Wildflowers of India” issued by the Department of Posts, India  on the occasion of the 11th Asian Pacific Postal Union Congress in New Delhi from 3rd to 6th September 2013. The Cancellation Stamp is of New Delhi GPO and is inscribed “e-Dakghar” (in Hindi) and “e-POSTOFFICE” (in English). The Hand stamp also shows the website of ePostoffice on a computer terminal. The Cancellation is dated “11.10.2016”.



        Special Cover on Mail and Philately Day - 13.10.2016
The above Special Postal Cover was issued by India Post on “MAIL AND PHILATELY DAY” on 13.10.2016. The images on the left hand side of the Special Cover show inter alia – several stamps issued by Indiapost, envelopes addressed to recipients etc. which are a Philatelist’s delight. The Special Cover is inscribed “Dak Evam Philately Diwas” (in Hindi) and “Mail & Philately Day” (in English) on right of the image going downwards.

The Rs.5/- stamp on the right is titled “HIMALAYAN LANTERN” which is part of a set of stamps titled “Wildflowers of India” issued by the Department of Posts, India  on the occasion of the 11th Asian Pacific Postal Union Congress in New Delhi from 3rd to 6th September 2013. The Cancellation Stamp is of New Delhi GPO and is inscribed “Dak Evam Philately Diwas” (in Hindi) and “Mail & Philately Day” (in English). The Hand stamp also shows mail during transit to its destination. The Cancellation is dated “13.10.2016”.



      Special Cover on Postal Life Insurance Day - 10.10.2016
The above Special Postal Cover was issued by India Post on “POSTAL LIFE INSURANCE DAY” on 14.10.2016. The images on the left hand side of the Special Cover show inter alia – the logo of the Postal Life Insurance showing a family being protected by safe hands. The Special Cover is inscribed “Dak Jeevan Bima Diwas” (in Hindi) and “POSTAL LIFE INSURANCE DAY” (in English) on the centre left.

The Rs.5/- stamp on the right is titled “RHODODENDRON” which is part of a set of stamps titled “Wildflowers of India” issued by the Department of Posts, India  on the occasion of the 11th Asian Pacific Postal Union Congress in New Delhi from 3rd to 6th September 2013. The Cancellation Stamp is of New Delhi GPO and is inscribed “Dak Evam Philately Diwas” (in Hindi) and “Mail & Philately Day” (in English). The Hand stamp also shows a hand protecting a growing sapling from the elements. The Cancellation is dated “14.10.2016”.



 Special Cover on National Postal Week - 09 to 15.10.2016
The above Special Postal Cover was issued by India Post on “NATIONAL POSTAL WEEK”. The images on the left hand side of the Special Cover show inter alia – shows a 500 Paise or Rs.5/- stamp issued on the occasion of completion of 150 years of India Post in 2004, a red letter box and a Post Office with a telephone booth on one flank and a letter box on the other, all placed in a stylised image of a stamp. The logo of India Post together with an air-mail envelope is on top of this image. The Special Cover is inscribed “Rashtriya Dak Saptah” (in Hindi) and “NATIONAL POSTAL WEEK” (in English) on the left hand bottom.

The Rs.5/- stamp on the right is titled “HIMALAYAN IRIS” which is part of a set of stamps titled “Wildflowers of India” issued by the Department of Posts, India  on the occasion of the 11th Asian Pacific Postal Union Congress in New Delhi from 3rd to 6th September 2013. The Cancellation Stamp is of New Delhi GPO and is inscribed “Rashtriya Dak Saptah” (in Hindi) and “NATIONAL POSTAL WEEK” (in English). The Hand stamp also shows the logo of India Post and the dates of the National Postal week – 09 – 15th October 2016. The Cancellation is dated “09-15.10.2016”.
