485) Shivneri Fort: A Special Cover celebrating the Birth Anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, brought out by the Philatelic Bureau, Pune and the Maharashtra Postal Circle of India Post on 19.02.2017:

The Special Cover on “SHIVNERI FORT” has been released at Pune by the Philatelic Bureau, Pune and Maharashtra Postal Circle on 19.02.2017:

It shows in the foreground the Shivneri Fort atop a high hilly terrain, making it impregnable from frontal/side attacks. In the background is an image of an inner structure of the Fort.

A shadow in the likeness of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the legendary warrior King, who was the founder of the Maratha Empire and who successfully beat back the might of the Mughal invaders from his lands, keeps a lookout over the approach to the fort, a symbolic gesture that the great Maratha king still inspires future generations of Indians to protect their motherland against foreign aggression.

On the top right is a stamp of 500 Paise or Rs.5/- issued in June 2016, which shows the first of the Asanas of the 24-step “Surya Namaskar Yog” (or the “Sun Yog” as it is popular in the West). Yog teaches self-discipline.

The Cancellation hand-stamp is of Pune GPO and shows a picture of a structure inside the Shivneri Fort. The Cancellation is dated “19.02.2017”.

On the Back of the Special Cover is the description in both Hindi and English stating:

“Shivneri Fort is situated near Junnar town in Pune District, about 90 kilometres from Pune. Shivneri is a hill fort having a triangular shape and has its entrance from the Southwest side of the hill. This fort was mainly used to guard the old trading route from Desh to the port city of Kalyan. The place passed on to the hands of Bahamani Kings after the weakening of Delhi Sultanate during the 15th century. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born at the fort on 19 February 1630 and spent his childhood there. Inside the fort is a small temple dedicated to the goddess Shivai Devi, after whom Shivaji Maharaj was named”.

On the lower bottom are the logos of India Post and Maharashtra Postal Circle.

The approval no MH/04/2017 figures on the top right odf this face of the envelope.

About Shivneri Fort:

Shivneri is a hill fort having a triangular shape and has its entrance from the Southwest side of the hill. It is located about 3 km from Junnar.

This area had a predominance of Buddhist culture/dominion from the 1st century AD as is evidenced from the rock-cut cave architecture and water system.

Shivneri fort got its name when it was under the possession of the Yadavas of Devagiri.

It is situated at an altitude of about 1100 feet. There are two routes to the fort – one path is through stone steps dug out from natural strata. These steps date back to the Satavahana era (which began around 231 BC),

the second path is a rough pathway that was quite hazardous a few years ago, but has since been improved. This path leads to a parapet and chain barricades. This entrance to the fort from the side is known as the “chain gate”, where one has to hold chains to climb up to the fort gate.

The fort extends up to 1 mile (or 1.6 Km) and has a total of seven well-defended gates called the – Maha Darwaza, Parvangicha Darwaza, Hatti Darwaza, Peer Darwaza, Shipai Darwaza, Phatak Darwaza and Kulambkat Darwaza. There are mud walls all around the fort.

The Maha Darwaza is closely followed by the Parvangicha Darwaza. The arched doorway has carved elephants on either side.

When one reaches the fifth Gate – the Shipai Darwaza, one has reached about halfway up the fort.

There is a water pond in the centre called the “Badami Talav”.

Two water springsGanga” and “Yamuna” provide water throughout the year.

Inside the fort, the major buildings are the prayer hall, a tomb and a mosque. There is an overhanging where executions took place.

Till 1925, the fort was in a state of neglect, which is when an attempt at conservation was made and a good motorable road was constructed upto the main gate.

In 1960, the statues of Jijamata and the young Shivaji were installed.

Every year, the birth celebrations of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj take place in a colourful festival like atmosphere.

The fort tapers to one side, with its Northern face being called “Kadeloat”.

By all accounts, the fort of Shivneri was invincible and was well stocked to sustain around 1000 families for upto 7 years.

There are a total of about 187 large and small forts in Maharashtra.

A map showing the location of all these forts has been displayed, engraved on the ground, atop the Shivneri Fort. The map is an enduring symbol of the gallant history that saw the flag of “Hindavi Swaraj” flutter far and wide, keeping the Mughal Forces at bay and reminiscent of the mighty power of the Maratha regime under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Past History – during the Maratha period:

This fort was mainly used to guard the old trading route from Desh to the port city of Kalyan.

The place passed on to the hands of Bahmani Kings after the weakening of Delhi Sultanate during the 15th century.

In 1595, the Maratha chief Maloji Bhosale, the grandfather of Shivaji Maharaj was granted, inter alia, the right to govern the territories of Shivner and Chakan, by the Bahmani King Bahadur Nizam Shah II.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born at the fort on 19 February 1630 and spent his childhood there. Inside the fort is a small temple dedicated to the goddess Shivai Devi, after whom Shivaji Maharaj was named.

Around Shivneri Fort:

Shivneri has a number of underground caves and the fort is surrounded on all sides by hill forts.

A little distance from the fort are the “Lenyadri caves” (a series of 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves.

Inside Cave No. 7 is a famous Hindu Temple dedicated to the god Ganesha which is one of the eight prominent Ganesha shrines (the “Ashta Vinayak”) in Western Maharashtra.

The irony:

It is a strange irony that the very fort where Shivaji was born in could never be later claimed by him.

His repeated attempts at the conquest of the fort proved futile.

In 1673, Shivaji brought about the defection of the fort’s keeper Aziz Khan to the Maratha cause.

In 1678, he laid siege to Junnar and marched ahead to mount a massive assault on the fort.

However, both these well planned campaigns were in vain and the fort continued to be under the control of the Mughals.

Finally, in 1716, it was Shahu Maharaj who brought back the fort into the Maratha fold.

Like most of Shivaji’s sprawling empire, Shivneri was controlled by the Peshwas for a brief period before falling into British hands through their machinations.
