The Royal Mint of Belgium release new collector silver coins which mark the seventy fifth anniversary of the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation – NATO.

This year, NATO marks an important milestone anniversary, which is observed during very challenging times. Regarded as the world’s oldest and most successful military alliance in history, the need for its guaranty of defence for all members equally is of paramount importance as the world navigates a very complicated political and military landscape.
The alliance was founded on the 4th April 1949 in the wake of the destruction and countless deaths left by six years of fighting in Europe during the Second World War. With the emergence of Soviet aggression, annexation of territory and the spread of communism, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation – NATO was then and still is seen by all its current members as the greatest deterrent to war while at the same time preserving lasting peace.
The alliance included as founding members twelve countries that were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
- The core principles of this international and intergovernmental organisation can be found in the joint defence pact in which the basis of NATO’s defence strategy is paramount to one particular article of the treaty.
Known as article 5, it clearly indicates that if any NATO member country comes under an armed attack, each and every other member of the Alliance will consider this act of violence, provocation or war and as an armed attack against all members simultaneously. Should an attack occur, NATO command would respond as one force with an armed counter-offense against the country who initiated the aggression and with actions it deems necessary to assist the Ally attacked. Currently, the alliance consists of thirty two countries, with Finland and Sweden, previously neutral states - formally joining NATO in 2023 and 2024.
Most EU member states are also part of the NATO alliance with the exception of Austria, Cyprus, Ireland and Malta.
To date, no member country has ever formally or permanently withdrawn from the alliance. The combined militaries of all NATO members include around 3.5 million soldiers and personnel.
All member states together cover an area of 25.07 million square kilometres or 9. 7 million square miles that includes much of North America and Western Europe with a population of 966.88 million people. NATO’s administrative headquarters has been located in Brussels, Belgium since 1967 and is where the NATO Secretary-General's office and the offices of the national delegations of the 32 member states meet regularly.
A separate headquarters for military operations or, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe – SHAPE is located in Casteau, south of Brussels.
The Silver Coin:
The coin has been minted by the Royal Dutch Mint at their facilities in Houten, Netherlands in association with the Royal Belgian Mint and is designed by Iris Bruijns.
The Reverse features the NATO emblem, projected over a globe composed of a pattern of dots to emphasise the intergovernmental aspect of the organisation.
Displayed is the abbreviation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in English, Dutch and French.
The anniversary itself is also shown in these three languages as text along the upper periphery as "NATO * NAVO * OTAN * and on the lower periphery "75 YEARS * JAAR * ANS," with the distinctive four-pointed NATO star separating each word.
The Obverse includes an effigy of King Philip designed by Luc Luycx, facing right along with his crowned monogram placed to the right and text surrounding the likeness of the King which reads - "BELGIE – BELGIQUE – BELGIEN" representing the official three languages of Belgium. The denomination "10 EURO" is placed below the King’s effigy and the year of issue "2024" is shown in a vertical direction.

- Each proof quality coin is encapsulated and presented in a custom case and accompanied with a numbered certificate of authenticity (COA).
